Workshops and Courses

ws

The Europa Institut at the UZH (EIZ) offers a range of further education opportunities in addition to the CAS programs. In addition to the seminars, the workshops, the course "Practical Aspects of the Legal Profession" and the Legal English course are long-standing and sought-after training courses.

Seminars

The EIZ is the leading provider of legal seminars in Switzerland. The programme comprises around 50 seminars a year on current and practice-relevant developments in various areas of law.

The focus is on commercial law at international, European and national level. Criminal law and public law topics are also addressed. Conference organisers and speakers are renowned experts from academia, politics and business from Germany and abroad.

The seminar programme is aimed in particular at lawyers, in-house counsel and practitioners from the public sector.

More information on the seminars can be found on the EIZ website.

Workshops

The EIZ offers workshops on selected areas of law, which are primarily dedicated to specific practical issues. Within the framework of a small group of participants, specific cases from practice are analysed and discussed and, in particular, possible solutions and their presentation are developed. Due to the deliberately small size of the groups, participants have the opportunity to ask questions and actively participate in the case work. The courses are led by renowned representatives of the legal profession in the respective areas of law.

To date, the EIZ has offered such workshops in labour law several times a year. In the past, several workshops have also been held in the areas of labour law and EU data protection law.

More information on the workshops can be found on the EIZ website.

Conflict management and mediation

Wherever people meet, conflict is never far away. Although this is experienced as stressful, conflict is also an opportunity. Recognising this and resolving the conflict creates added value for ourselves as well as for the company or organisation we work for.

In this training course organised by the Europa Institut at the University of Zurich, we show you how to conduct difficult conversations in a de-escalating and solution-oriented manner. You will learn how to channel confrontational situations into constructive channels. We will show you communication techniques that can be implemented immediately. As a manager or specialist, you will learn how to support conflict parties in resolving and overcoming conflicts.

The knowledge transfer is practice-oriented and aims not only to impart knowledge to the participants, but also to enable them to apply what they have learnt immediately. T

he training in business mediation recognised by the SKWM (attendance of modules 1-5) integrates conflict management and is suitable for managers, among others.

More information on the seminars can be found on the EIZ website.

Since 2004, the Zurich Bar Association (ZAV), in cooperation with the EIZ, has been offering a course on practical issues relating to the practice of law (formerly known as the "Craftsmanship Course"). This recognises the fact that there is a lack of systematic training for lawyers in our region and that lawyers do not receive all the tools they need for practical work as lawyers either at university or in court.

The aim of this course, which is offered in four modules, is to provide practical training for people entering the legal profession. The aim is to expand professional knowledge and skills. The course is aimed at lawyers who are starting or have started working as lawyers, but also at legal staff in law firms who are not admitted to the bar. The course only teaches formal or substantive law in the areas specific to the profession. It is not intended as preparation for the bar exam. Admission requirements are a law degree or equivalent from a Swiss or foreign university.

More information on the seminars can be found on the EIZ website.

In the beginning was the word. Then came the law. The Europa Institut has been offering tuition on Legal English for over 20 years and now announces a new course for 2024. Proficiency in Legal English is an excellent skill for legal professionals. The use of Legal English in commerce and international law is unavoidable. Law firms with an international focus and most corporate legal departments must often deal with cross-border projects and issues. The ability to use Legal English competently and confidently has therefore become a requirement for lawyers working in an international environment.
